way they look at life. It’s exciting, and, it energizes everyone around them.  Letting go of regrets and expectations, they are grabbing onto to the moment with a different kind of enthusiasm than they had when they were young. Now, their enthusiasm is tempered with wisdom and experience.

I’ve experienced this feeling and it’s amazing. It doesn’t happen every day for any of us, but even just once in a while is enough to keep me going.

When my kids left for college I decided I needed, no wanted, to make significant changes in my life. Up until that point, I was driven by the desire to meet the needs of my children and family. I spent most of my life in hyper-put-everyone-else-first mode – you know the one that seems to have taken over the psyche of women of our generation?

NURTURE YOUR DREAMS

Nurturing and watching over the less able is hardwired into our DNA as women. And as the expression goes, it’s a blessing and a curse. The problem for me has been that this mindset can become ones whole identity. Then, we tend to forget, or shove aside, other aspects of our personalities, abilities and interests.  Boomer women who chose the career track , some with children and some without, are telling me that they have come to realize that there’s more to life than achieving and being successful and they have gone to work realigning their lives with a fuller version of themselves.

Women over 50 are taking advantage of the opportunities allotted them via that better health and longevity and writing a new chapter in their lives. We forget that is also a new chapter in history. Women are starting second careers, traveling, giving back to the world in whatever way their essential selves are calling them to do.  Jan, at 50, started a home care business in Knoxville, TN. She saw a need and decided to fill it. Mary sold everything she owned and moved to a farm where she is living a simpler, more fulfilling life. I left our family business and began to write full-time. The sky is the limit for anyone who is willing to take a risk and follow their dreams. Will it be perfect? Nothing ever is, but it is always an adventure.

Hemp oil is all the rage these days. It seems it’s the latest best new thing for our health. When I was asked to review a hemp oil product I Hemp Oilhesitated.  I’m a bit of a late comer to whole foods and natural remedies. From a philosophical standpoint I’m always open to new ideas and an ever-expanding view of life, but when it comes to ingesting things I don’t understand I fall back on my upbringing.  My English mother made it abundantly clear to her five children that the only things worth ingesting were meat, vegetables and potatoes, in small amounts three times a day. She’d throw in a multi-vitamin on occasion for good measure. It served me well in the psycho-tropic drug era, but things have changed.

Modern medicine failed me one too many times and a complex world left me searching for better solutions to my health concerns. No more would a pat on the head and a prescription from my doctor serve me.  Little by little, I stuck my toe in the waters of “natural” remedies. Fortunately, I had a willing and very patient guide, and my outlook has forever changed.  So here I am facing down Hemp oil, wondering if I dare. After all, it has cannabinoids on the label. Sounds suspiciously like marajahooch, and I’m too old for that stuff! But, I decided to take the risk because if it does what they say it does, I’m in!

First of all, Hemp oil does not contain THC, the stuff in marijuana that some of us once found so appealing. In fact, it’s a slightly different plant, as you will see in the graphic to the right. So rest easy and read on.

Hemp Oil in Your Diet

Hemp Oil Receptra PrimeHemp oil, a vegetable oil, is derived from hemp seeds. Low in saturated fats, it is high in antioxidants. Hemp Oil for Your Skin

The sample I received from RECEPTRA is a dietary supplement, but Hemp oil is also great for the skin. Hemp oil skin products can be used to alleviate dry skin. Rub it directly on dry or cracked areas. Use it on hands, feet, cuticles, nails and to remove makeup. It’s also used to condition hair, reduce acne and eczema. Research has found it to be an effective treatment for atopic dermatitis as well.

MY EXPERIENCE with RECEPTRA PRIME Hemp Oil

I’ve only been using it a week but so far it’s a painless process. Whenever I start something new, I start out very slowly. The directions say to use a full dropper 2 to 3 times a day. I started with 1/2 dropper once a day, and am now taking a full dropper once a day. I started it with plenty of aches and pains so if it helps I will be sure to let you know!

HOW TO MANAGE YOUR FEAR & ANGER POST ELECTION

Fear and AngerPanic, fear and anger are very normal responses to what has taken place over the last week (and months). Many of us feel threatened and angered by all that is happening. We are in hyper-reactivity mode and our emotions have been propelling us forward. Everywhere people are saying and doing things they would not ordinarily say or do.

This high adrenaline response (survival response) is a natural and normal biological response, programmed into our DNA, to give us the biological resources we need to keep ourselves and our loved ones safe in a threatening situation. It is not ALL that we are. Not by a long shot, and it’s important that we take time, now, to reconnect with the rational and more expansive aspects of our selves.

The threat seems immediate and our bodies are responding as if it is. But, it is not, at least for most of us. Our bodies don’t know this, and the adrenaline coursing through our veins is telling us to fight or flee when there’s nowhere to flee and no one to punch! We take this adrenaline to social media and pick fights with our words, or we bark at our kids or spouses. This doesn’t satisfy our bodies need for calm. In fact, it keeps us in a heightened state of reactivity and keeps the adrenaline flowing.

Our best course of action at this time is to do the opposite. It may feel counter intuitive, but we need to make a concerted effort to calm ourselves. Remaining in a hyper alert state for long periods of time is hard on our bodies and will ultimately drain our resources. We may need these resources down the road when a course of action becomes clear.

Now it behooves us to take a deep breath and do everything we can to find our center of calm. We think more clearly when we are calm. We act more carefully and intelligently when we are calm. During challenging times such as these, we need to think and act with the best of who we are, not in reaction to a set of circumstances that at this time is beyond our control. There will come a time for action. We will know it when it arrives. Today, taking care of ourselves and restoring our sense of security within ourselves is our job.

As we live out the coming months and years, our ability to be vigilant in our self-care, will allow us to stay the course. Establishing a sense of security and calm within ourselves provides an anchor that will help us ride out the storms.

In my experience this can be accomplished by engaging in any or all of these practices. You may have your own.

  • avoid unnecessary confrontation
  • decrease exposure to inflammatory rhetoric/media
  • disconnect entirely from the internet for a period of time
  •  limit news/TV/electronic devices
  • take several deep breaths periodically throughout the day – we tend to hold our breath and breath shallowly when we are tense; deep breathing actually activates calming mechanisms in our body.
  • moderate exercise – a brisk walk, swimming, dancing
  • spending time outdoors, preferably in a natural setting away from the hustle and bustle of every day life.
  • pets can be calming – take some time each day to cuddle with yours; no doubt they will be calmer as well!
  • eat healthfully and avoid alcohol and junk food (Adrenal Burnout Soup Recipe)
  • get lots of sleep (even if you need a little help to do so for a while)
  • spend time with people who are calm and with whom you feel safe;
  • avoid those who don’t (it doesn’t mean you have to stop loving them!)
  • soak in a hot tub
  • use essential oils in a diffuser or sprinkle on a cotton ball and carry in your pocket
  • meditate/pray
  • practice mindfulness
  • body work/massage/
  • read positive, reflective literature
  • tune into yourself in silence; heart/mind/body/soul
  • Listen to and follow your intuition

365 Day Journey of Gratitude – A Milestone Birthday

People tell me that my 65th birthday (yesterday) was a milestone. Historically speaking, it represented “retirement”. For many, this is still a milestone. But for me,  there has not been, in decades, a separation between work and life. Life is something I wouldn’t leave. Work, in the old-fashioned sense,  is something I try not to do!

I started to think what a milestone really represents. By definition is a stone placed as a mile marker. Since we don’t do that anymore, that I’m aware of, the metaphor has taken hold as the meaning: “A significant event or stage in the life, progress, development, or the like of a person, nation, etc.” We so naturally  think in metaphors!  It is one of our many gifts as humans for which I am grateful.

In terms of my own personal milestones, I measure my progress by the depth of my love. When I’m open and honest and true, I feel like I’m on the right road. When I’m angry, resentful or irritable, I know it’s time to take a closer look at what’s going on inside of me, and/or in my life. My only goal in life is to be more fully present in love in any situation I find myself.  As for the world and what represents “milestones” to it, we run into a problem.

The problem is this. There are no rituals or  traditions in place to celebrate the important passages in our culture — those that honor the progress and stages of a woman’s life., for instance.  Crossing into the world of the empty nester was a milestone in my life.  Menopause was a milestone. Recovering from trauma was a milestone. These things I would have enjoyed celebrating. But turning 65? Not very important in the overall scheme of things for me.

However, I have decided to challenge myself this year to post a gratitude every day for 365 days. That would be an accomplishment! That would be an effort that might bring about a change in my life worth creating. I could always use a little more positive thinking! Ask my husband!

Voices of WisdomThe VOICES OF WISDOM SERIES will begin August 3rd!

I’m so excited! Things are falling into place for the Voices of Wisdom Series. I’m thrilled to have so many wise and courageous women offer to share a bit of their story with us here. I know we will all gain insight, perspective and inspiration from them. I can’t wait to get started!

If the stars hanging over my world stay in alignment, the series will begin next Wednesday, August 3rd. Each subsequent Wednesday we will hear from another wise woman. Occasionally, I will post a book review of a memoir written by a woman over fifty or a book that I found helpful in my own journey through midlife and beyond.

Let me introduce you to the first two women we will hear from:

She shares what she has learned since then in our first post next week.

Kathy Pooler is an author and a retired Family Nurse Practitioner.  She has also navigated her way through domestic abuse, divorce, single parenting, an alcoholic son, cancer and heart failure. How dull life would be if we always remained the same! Yet, day-to-day life in this crazy, mixed-up world has activated a visceral longing for peace and security. I’ve read numerous blogs in recent weeks written by friends who are trying to find a way to navigate the political and social morass that greets us each morning via the little black box that sits in the corner of our homes. I’m not talking about the TV. That is only one vehicle of transmission. No, it’s so much larger than that now. There are copious avenues of transmission, each vying for our mental and emotional attention with great bravado. An attempt to fight off the incoming feels about as successful as putting a finger in a hole of a sinking ship.

Joan Z. Rough, author of SCATTERING ASHES, A Memoir of Letting Go, (September 2016) and a self-proclaimed news junkie wrote in this in her blog last week:

Managing my stress is an important part of my self-care. I do not want to live with constant anxiety which turns my gut into a churning cement mixer filled with rocks. I get jumpy, depressed and feel hopeless. At the ripe old age of seventy-three, I want a life of ease. I can’t afford the damage that stress causes to my mind, spirit and body.”

Joan goes on to explain just how she reacts to too much news and what she is doing about it. Like many women over fifty, Joan is a shape shifter, a magical reinventor. She finds her way through life’s endless treacheries, by building her wisdom bank account. She is not trouble-free. No one is, despite the impression many give on social media. Joan is simply bold, brave and courageous more often than she is not.  She is open to growing, changing and learning the deeper, richer truths of life. Follow her blog and see for yourself.

Daisy Hickman, whose memoir The Silence of Morning I recently reviewed here, also flies through life-like a dragonfly. She shares her wisdom for navigating this “brave new world” in her post Disconnect From Uncertainty and Chaos. I learn something new about shape-shifting and courage every time I enter the Sunny Rooms Studio, where Daisy shares her wisdom. Her cyber studio reflects her philosophy of life and her how she has come to avoid too much chaos:  “A sunny room isn’t about always being upbeat, energized, or falsely positive. Rather, it’s about exploring topics that take us beyond the contentious nature of the world — the noticeable penchant for conflict, negativity, acrimony, controversy, and drama. There is more to life than surface distractions.”  Ah…that is wisdom. 

When I began Aging Abundantly, what seems now like a lifetime ago, I was consumed with what I often refer to as my “midlife transformation”. The quote, “Just when a caterpillar thought the world was over, she became a butterfly” became my personal mantra and the focus of my understanding of the aging process.  I entered midlife thinking it was the end, only to discover that it was the beginning. I was being melted down into viscous matter, as was my life, in order to be re-born into a more meaningful way of living and being.  I’ve come to believe that while our deepest transformation, or “dark night of the soul”, may occur in one fell swoop, the process of transformation, never ends as we are in the game. We don’t ever “arrive” unless we turn our backs on the process, and even then it has away of coming after us.

A decade later as I approach sixty-five, I am no less enchanted by the women of wisdom I continue to meet through Aging Abundantly and beyond. I feel blessed and privileged to have a little black box in my house that allows me to reach out and touch so many of them, to learn from them and with them, to walk beside them as together we grow, change, evolve, transform, and search for the gifts not only of the aging process, but of life itself.

As I move on in my journey, I find myself longing to focus in on the completion of several books I have started, in-between trauma and transformation, and keeping up with this and other endeavors. I long to put everything aside and sink into the writing of a memoir. I’ve always had more ideas than I could ever complete, now I have to accept that condition and work within its limitations.

I am not abandoning Aging Abundantly, I will just be shifting its focus from only my words to the voice of many. There is such beauty and wisdom in the collective vision of our generation. Together we are creating a tapestry of wisdom, unique to this time and place and I hope to be able to pick up a strand or two here to share with you as I launch The Voices of Wisdom Series™. Each Wednesday, I will introduce you to a woman whose wisdom I have come to value, and together we can listen to her voice. Sometimes the post will be written by others, sometimes I will post interviews and book reviews. always with an eye toward gleaning wisdom from voices of wisdom.

Wisdom, as defined in the Free Dictionary is, “the ability to discern or judge what is true, right and lasting; insight.” Each guest post  ill offer a slice of wisdom as it pertains to aging abundantly in a chaotic world. Be sure to tune in as they sprinkle a little of their magic on these pages and inspire and assist us in becoming more ardent shape-shifters and magical-reinvetors.
