OVER 65: ESSENTIAL HEALTH CHECKS – Enjoy Your Best Years!

Life over 65 should be all about enjoyment. You should have the chance to use your time as you see fit, indulging in hobbies, and spending time with your loved ones. A British study actually found that those aged between 65 and 79 are the “happiest of all” people.

In order to ensure you can continue to live your best life when your over 65, regular health checks are essential. When issues are identified early, the chances of successful treatment increase dramatically. To make sure you can continue to enjoy the happiest years of your life, here’s five health checks you’ll definitely want to arrange…

#1 – A hearing test

According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), almost 25% of people over the age of 65 experience hearing loss. Unfortunately, hearing loss develops gradually, which means it can be difficult to notice its onset. It makes good sense to start early and make an appointment for a hearing loss test once a year after the age of 65. If you are diagnosed with hearing loss, the good news is that treatment via hearing aids is incredibly effective.

#2 – Cancer screenings

Colorectal cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in those over the age of 50, so annual screenings are strongly recommended. In addition, men may also benefit from prostate cancer screening and women from mammograms that can screen for breast cancer. Your doctor will be able to recommend if these screenings are suitable for you.

#3 – Blood pressure checks

High blood pressure (or hypertension) can be highly detrimental to overall health and well-being. However, similar to hearing loss, the condition can be difficult to identify in its early stages. It’s therefore worth monitoring your blood pressure with annual checks with your doctor. Alternatively, purchase a medically-approved device that you can use at home, and check your blood pressure monthly.

#4 – Bone density tests

Osteoporosis is a common condition among those over 65, especially women. Check with your doctor to see if its advisable to have a bone density test.  Getting started on this condition early can also improve the outcome.

#5 – Mole checking and monitoring

Skin cancer can occur at any age, but those over 65 are more likely to experience this condition. It is thought that a higher risk is due to prolonged UV exposure over a number of years, causing a cumulative and harmful effect. It is therefore important to check your skin regularly, paying particular attention to moles and other blemishes. You may find it useful to photograph each mole; this allows you to identify any changes that occur over a period of time. If you notice any moles that show concerning signs, speak to your doctor as soon as possible.
