LIFE AFTER 50: Tips to Help You Age Better

Life after 50 just keeps getting better and better! It’s the perfect time to start taking better care of yourself and making the changes you’ve always wanted to make. After all, the effort you make now will help ensure you enjoy your older wiser years. Now is the time to learn everything you need to know about boosting your confidence when you are over the age of 50.

Watch what you Eat

This may sound very obvious, but having a balanced diet is incredibly important. A good diet will improve your energy level, improve your immune system and help keep you well and active to enjoy the best years of your life. The best diet is low in saturated fats, and contains lots of fruit and vegetables. In addition, include wholegrains, oily fish and a small amount of dairy. Lean meat is also part of a healthy diet. Be sure to check with your doctor before starting a weight loss program.

It’s also vital to include plenty of water to avoid dehydration. We often get so busy we forget to drink water, but you may notice that you feel more tired, light headed, or have trouble sleeping when you’re dehydrated. Use such things as reminders to drink more water.  Herbal teas are a great option when you tire of water, but remember that any drink with caffeine acts as a diuretic and works against proper hydration. Also, avoid carbonated and sugary drinks. If you drink alcohol, limit your intake to one drink a couple of times a week.

Look after your Teeth

Taking care of your teeth is as important for life after 50 as it was for life as a child. Make sure that you brush your teeth twice every day. Your dental hygienist  has probably told you the importance of flossing. As we age, gum disease becomes more of an issue and flossing is great way to prevent it. You might want to try a water pick. They are very effective at removing plaque and bits of food from your teeth. Bleeding gums is a sign of gum disease, so if you struggle with this condition, speak with your dentist. It is also commonly linked with diabetes, arthritis, heart disease and even stroke. If you wear dentures, get them checked on a regular basis.

Go and See your Doctor

Visit your doctor on a regular basis. They will help you keep up with routine testing and address any concern you might have. A family doctor will routinely check your blood pressure, cholesterol levels and help you decrease your risk of heart disease and stroke. If you have neck, back or leg problems, a chiropractor can help keep you in proper alignment and avoid or postpone the need for knee or hip replacement surgery. There are many chiropractors who are likely available in your local area.

Stay Active

Day to day exercise will help you to stay strong and healthy. A brisk walk every day will lower your risk of obesity and help prevent heart disease. Exercise has also been shown to limit the chances of developing certain types of cancer.  Best of all, regular exercise will boost your spirits and your confidence for your new life after 50.  It’s recommended that older adults do around 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week.
